Sumitomo Corporation Global Metals Co., Ltd. and SUN METALON. Inc. Announce Investment and Business Alliance to Lead Metal Industry Decarbonization

SCGM (Sumitomo Corporation Global Metals Co., Ltd., a trading company specialized in steel products, its headquarters located in Tokyo, Japan, and led by Mr. Hiroshi Murakami, President & CEO), and SUN METALON (SUN METALON Inc., a pioneering US-based startup in metal industry decarbonization, its headquarters located in Cambridge, MA, USA, and led by Mr. Kazuhiko Nishioka, Co-founder & CEO) are pleased to announce that SCGM has participated in SUN METALON’s Series A funding round and the two companies have initiated a collaboration in metal resource recycling business.

The demand for metal scrap as a recycled raw material is expected to increase in the coming years, contributing to the decarbonization of the metal industry. SUN METALON’s proprietary efficient metal heating technology, compared to conventional metal resource recycling processes, not only reduces CO2 emissions but also contributes to lower costs, improved safety, and higher quality. This technology can revitalize various types of metal scraps into higher-value resources, revolutionizing the metal manufacturing industry, which accounts for more than 10% of global CO2 emissions, and realizing clean and sustainable production.

SCGM and SUN METALON aim for the rapid social implementation of this technology. They will establish a strong sales network through SCGM’s’ extensive customer base and contribute to the realization of a sustainable and prosperous society through the commercialization of advanced metal resource recycling. This will involve the manufacturing and sale of high-grade briquettes with impurities removed using this heating technology.
